RöD/BLå “shreds”
To celebrate the release of our digital album collection (see previous post below), we played an almost unplugged private concert at an intimate and cozy artist residence in Helsinki. HiRes-videos soon, but we’ll start with a lo-fi “contemporary music shreds”-version (meaning it’s out of sync on purpose)…

AKI RISSANEN – STURM (ILMA001)

Aki Rissanen’s solo piano album Sturm was born in his own words from necessity and desire to release something very different when looking back to his earlier career. Aki is known primarily as a jazz pianist: “90% of my job description consists of and has always been acoustic jazz – sometimes in a more pluralistic context though. However, I have always created music with computers and electronic instruments.” This new album was built up through improvisation with, for him, a new instrument: “I recently acquired a 70’s Yamaha electric grand piano. This instrument has been touring around Finland with Kirka and Paula Koivuniemi (legendary Finnish entertaining artists). This piano’s new life, in my hands, is musically a little bit different… The instrument is at the same time acoustic and electronic, and the album is mainly made with this instrument. However, I also wanted to use acoustic grand piano on a few occasions.” At early point the project took shape in clearly electro-acoustic form. All sounds are originally born with grand piano, electric or acoustic, but have since been modified through computer sequencing and/or granular sampling. Influences on the album have been fetched (for example) from noise, static drone-based music and contemporary classical timbres.

JOONAS RIIPPA – 105% (ILMA003)

Joonas Riippa’s debut album is a streaming service optimized, 105 percent cavalcade consisting of “single-hits”. Works also as a whole. Here’s a translation of our sarcastic and humorous mail conversation, which describes the group´s working aesthetics:

RöD/BLå – FRANZ BIBERKOPF (ILMA004)

When the Sweden settled producer/musician Pekka Tuppurainen marched RöD/BLå -quintet into studio to record their second album, his original idea was to record a “weltschmerz” – album, which would sound slightly like 70’s horror movie soundtrack. Instead the idea was shot down, but the recordings continued. Production work, however, halted for a year and turning the “weltschmerz” into personal crisis… After Pekka was forced to start working with the three days clatter (during the summer of 2015), salvation arrived in the form of Rainer Werner Fassbinder‘s Berlin Alexanderplatz TV-series (1980) based on a book by Alfred Döblin. Massive, cumbersome and being of highest quality, the series´ huge amount of dialogue, protagonist Franz Biberkopf’s at least questionable features and ca. 1930’s Berlin seemed staggeringly timely. Not least because of the then ongoing heated equality discussion (in Sweden during 2015) regarding the abusive and power greedy men working at the field of culture (“kulturmannen”) and the populistic right-wing politics euphoria taking place almost everywhere. Also, when watching the series, Pekka often thought that: “Oh, I wish there was a little break in the dialogue right now…” There was not. And so there isn’t on the album either. Resulting as a unfriendly 54-minute-long musical episode consisting of separate scenes, the album is transforming from “soundcheck-like weltschmerz” into something else – kind of like Franz Biberkopf´s journey through the series. The length of the album corresponds more or less one Berlin Alexanderplatz-episode without intro- and outro music. There are also some direct references to the series (eg. a nationalist Die Wacht Am Rhein-song that is topical again, it seems) and a number of indirect references that are, rather, only small fragments – important mainly for the artist.

RöD/BLå in studio

Kuvakollaasi_1.0_pieni

After two years break,  RöD/BLå-quintet (Magnus Broo / Trumpet, Mikko Innanen / Sax, Joonas Riippa / Drums, Aki Rissanen / Yamaha CP70, Pekka Tuppurainen / Yamaha PortaSound, electronics & guitar) went to studio in Helsinki a few weeks ago. We are very excited about the stuff we recorded. The whole session was also filmed by Kai Rauhansalo from SVT (stills taken from his material). More info later…

New music coming up

Röd/Blå -quintet (Magnus Broo / Mikko Innanen / Joonas Riippa / Aki Rissanen / Pekka Tuppurainen) heads to studio in the end of march 2014.
